A national public research and scientific support organization responsible for promoting biomedical and health science research. Its mission is to develop and provide the highest quality scientific-technical services to the National Healthcare System and society in general.

The Carlos III Health Institute was created pursuant to the General Healthcare Law 14/1986, enacted on 25 April as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Consumption.

It is governed by a Board of Directors whose members are well-known science or healthcare professionals, and by a Chairman, who is a Managing Director.

In order to contribute to structuring research in the National Healthcare System, the Carlos III Health Institute, enters into associations with National Healthcare System research centers, authorizes institutes and cooperative research networks to focus research in the stipulated objectives, and promote excellent research as well as providing its own research resources.
